Internet Explorer in Microsoft Windows

Overview of Internet Explorer versions and keyboard shortcuts in Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1

Internet Explorer is the default web browser in Microsoft Windows. It offers reasonable browsing speed, security and user experience.

Windows XP users should upgrade to Internet Explorer 8. 64-bit version is available here.
Windows Vista users should upgrade to Internet Explorer 9. 64-bit version is available here.
Windows 7 users should upgrade to Internet Explorer 11.
Windows 8 users have Internet Explorer 10 (Desktop and Modern UI/Metro versions). Upgrade to version 11 is available only by upgrading to Windows 8.1 (free for existing Windows 8 users).
Windows 8.1 has Internet Explorer 11 (Desktop program and Modern UI app).

Keyboard shortcuts available since Internet Explorer 8:

  • F1 - Display Help
  • F11 - Toggle between full-screen and regular views of the browser window
  • TAB - Move forward through the items on a webpage, the Address bar, or the Favorites bar
  • SHIFT+TAB - Move back through the items on a webpage, the Address bar, or the Favorites bar
  • F7 - Start Caret Browsing
  • ALT+HOME - Go to your home page
  • ALT+RIGHT ARROW - Go to the next page in History
  • ALT+LEFT ARROW or BACKSPACE - Go to the previous page in History
  • SHIFT+F10 - Display a shortcut menu for a link
  • CTRL+TAB or F6 - Move forward through frames and browser elements
  • UP ARROW - Scroll toward the beginning of a document
  • DOWN ARROW - Scroll toward the end of a document
  • PAGE UP - Scroll toward the beginning of a document one screen/page at a time
  • PAGE DOWN - Scroll toward the end of a document one screen/page at a time
  • HOME - Move to the beginning of a document
  • END - Move to the end of a document
  • CTRL+F - Find on this page
  • CTRL+E - Go to the search box
  • CTRL+DOWN ARROW - Open the search provider menu
  • F5 - Refresh the current webpage
  • CTRL+F5 - Force refresh of the current webpage
  • ESC - Stop downloading a page
  • CTRL+O - Open a new website or page
  • CTRL+N - Open a new window
  • CTRL+SHIFT+P - Open a new InPrivate Browsing window
  • ALT+D - Select the text in the Address bar
  • F4 - Display a list of addresses you've typed
  • CTRL+LEFT ARROW - When in the Address bar, move the cursor left to the next logical break in the address (period or slash)
  • CTRL+RIGHT ARROW - When in the Address bar, move the cursor right to the next logical break in the address (period or slash)
  • CTRL+ENTER - Add "www." to the beginning and ".com" to the end of the text typed in the Address bar
  • CTRL+click - Open links in a new tab in the background
  • CTRL+SHIFT+click - Open links in a new tab in the foreground
  • CTRL+T - Open a new tab in the foreground
  • CTRL+TAB or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB - Switch between tabs
  • CTRL+n (where n is a number between 1 and 8) - Switch to a specific tab number
  • CTRL+9 - Switch to the last tab
  • CTRL+ALT+F4 - Close other tabs
  • CTRL+Q - Toggle Quick Tabs (thumbnail view) on or off
  • CTRL+K - Duplicate tab (open current tab in a new tab)

  • CTRL+D - Add the current page to your favorites (or subscribe to the feed when in feed preview)
  • CTRL+SHIFT+DEL - Delete browsing history
  • CTRL+B - Open the Organize Favorites dialog box
  • ALT+UP ARROW - Move selected item up in the Favorites list in the Organize Favorites dialog box
  • ALT+DOWN ARROW - Move selected item down in the Favorites list in the Organize Favorites dialog box
  • ALT+C - Open Favorites Center and display your favorites
  • CTRL+J - Open and dock the Favorites Center and display your feeds
  • CTRL+SHIFT+J - Open and dock the Favorites Center and display your feeds
  • ALT+Z - Open the Add to Favorites menu (or open Subscribe to feed when in feed preview)
  • ALT+A - Open the Favorites menu from the menu bar
  • ALT+I - Display all feeds (when in feed view)
  • ALT+M - Mark a feed as read (when in feed view)
  • ALT+S - Put cursor in Search box in feed view
  • ALT+N - Move focus to the Information bar / Notification bar
  • SPACEBAR - Click the Information bar

Keyboard shortcuts available since Internet Explorer 9:

  • Ctrl+J - Open Download Manager
  • Ctrl+E - Open a search query in the Address bar
  • Ctrl+Shift+L - Search using copied text
