As writing CDs and DVDs is quite essential by now, there must be a free program to do it all. Yes, there is - CDBurnerXP. 
CDBurnerXP can write all kinds of CDs, DVDs and even HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. It can also burn disc images. So whether you need an audio disc for your old CD-player, a MP3 disc for your car stereo or a video-DVD for your DVD-player - CDBurnerXP can do it all for free!
Go to CDBurnerXP download page and click on Download latest version link.
CDBurnerXP requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher to work properly. As the required version is always present in Windows Vista, 7 and 8, the next section affects Windows XP users only.
Click here to show or hide instructions on installing the .NET FrameworkIf there is no Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher installed on your Windows XP computer, you will see a warning dialog. Click Yes.
Setup will open download page for the latest .NET Framework version. Click Install it now.
Internet Explorer will ask what you want to do with the file, click Run.
After download is complete, another security warning will be displayed. As long as Publisher is Microsoft Corporation, it is safe to click Run.
Then .NET Framework setup starts, choose I have read and ACCEPT the terms of the License Agreement and then click Install.
.NET Framework will then download the necessary files and install itself. This can be a lengthy process (even up to an hour), grab a juice and do some exercise.
After setup is complete, click Exit. CDBurnerXP setup will continue.
CDBurnerXP installer will start and display a welcome screen. Click Next.
In the License Agreement page, click I accept the agreement and then click Next.
As the destination folder is OK, click Next.
In the Select Components page choose Compact installation from drop-down menu (we do not need all those languages) and click Next again.
The Provide CD/DVD access for any user, regardless of security policies option is visible for Windows XP users only. Keep this one checked as it gives CD/DVD creation rights for all users, not just administrators. In Windows Vista, 7 and 8, the rights are fine by default.
The Select Additional Tasks page gives you a choice - if you want to burn CDs and DVDs often, leave the Create a desktop icon and Create a Quick Launch icon boxes checked. If not, clear these.
If you want easy shortcuts in Windows Explorer for sending selected files or folders to CDBurnerXP for media creation, enable the Add to "Send to" menu option.
Always put a check mark in the Associate ISO (.iso) files with CDBurnerXP box.
Then click Next or Install.
If CDBurnerXP setup offers to install Ask Toolbar, DriverScanner 2011, Nitro PDF Reader, Registry Reviver or some other software, select the I do not want to install <program name> option. Then click the Install button below. Keep your computers free of bundled software that you never really need.
After setup is complete, you will see the following screen. Leave Launch CDBurnerXP checked if you want to start burning some CDs or DVDs right away. Otherwise, clear it.
Click Finish.
That's it - the free CD/DVD writing and copying program is installed!
