Use UPHC for faster logoffs in Windows XP

Most Windows XP machines experience slow user logoffs from time to time. Also, events with ID 1517 and 1524 appear in Application log of Event Viewer to inform users of this. This happens because a service or application is still using user's registry file while that user is logging off.

To avoid such problems and keep your Windows XP running smoothly, install User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHC) by Microsoft. The same program also works on Windows 2000, where event ID 1000 is logged during slow log offs.

Open UPHC download page and click Download right to UPHClean-Setup.msi.
There is no need for downloading the readme.txt file.

After downloading and launching, User Profile Hive Cleanup Service Setup Wizard opens. Click Next.

A standard non-understandable License Agreement opens (Microsoft has a whole server park for generating human-illegible License Agreements... nah, just kidding - they use Agents from the "Matrix" instead ). If you are a lawyer or you happen to have too much time, you can read it and explain it in plain English to other people.
Otherwise click I Agree and then click Next.

As default installation folder is fine, click Next.

Then Microsoft wants you to be really sure that you want to install the software. Well, you are, aren't you? Click Next to start installing the UPHC Service.

During the installation a black command prompt window opens to start the UPHC Service. It will close by itself, wait until Installation Complete dialog. Click Close and you're done!

Now User Profile Hive Cleanup Service works automatically in background as a service. There are no configuration options and the program only appears in Services console and Add/Remove Programs applet of Control Panel.

Whoa, this makes it the easiest software Microsoft has created... ever!
