Securing Opera

In this tutorial: How to configure Opera for safer internet browsing in Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7

Last modified: 2011-12-25 12:44:41 EET

Open Opera settings by clicking the big red O button in the top left corner, clicking Settings and then Preferences.... Alternatively, use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F12 for this.
Opera, File menu. To open Opera preferences, click Settings and then Preferences.

Click Forms tab and clear the Enable Password Manager check box. This is very important because malware can easily steal all user names and passwords for sites you have visited (including your bank!). Use Password Safe for remembering passwords instead.
Opera, Preferences, Forms tab. Clear the Enable Password Manager check box.

Next, open Advanced tab and select Content from the left. Click JavaScript Options.
Opera, Preferences, Advanced tab, Content. Click JavaScript Options button.

JavaScript Options window opens. Leave only Allow changing of status field and Allow scripts to detect context menu events boxes selected. This will keep malicious sites from messing around with open Opera windows.
Click OK after making changes.
Opera, Preferences, JavaScript Options. Leave only Allow changing of status field and Allow scripts to detect context menu events boxes selected.

Back in Advanced tab of Preferences window, click Cookies on the left. Activate the Accept cookies only from the site I visit option.
Those very concerned about their privacy should click to select the Delete new cookies when exiting Opera check box.
Never enable this option if you are using two-factor authentication on web sites such as Gmail or Facebook!
Opera, Preferences, Advanced tab, Cookies. Select the Delete new cookies when exiting Opera check box.

Click Security on the left side. Make sure that the Enable Fraud and Malware Protection (this used to be "Enable Fraud Protection" until version 10.61) box is selected. This will keep you away from malicious sites.
Finally, select Automatically install updates from the Auto-update box.
Opera, Preferences, Advanced tab, Security. Check the Enable Fraud and Malware Protection box. From the Auto-update box select Automatically install updates.

And the last thing - click Network on the left side. Clear the Enable geolocation box to disable web sites and applications finding out where you are. This is a very important step towards better privacy in today's world.
Opera, Preferences, Advanced tab, Network. Clear the Enable geolocation box. Click OK to return to Opera.

That's it - click OK button to return to Opera.
